How to Release Emotions Trapped in Your Body. How to Process Emotions Like Trauma and Anxiety. Every system in your body responds to the emotions that you feel. Emotion is everywhere and affects everything. We mistakingly believe that by changing the external factors in our life we will feel differently, but in reality we have to complete the cycle of the emotion, or it can manifest disease, or attract a similar situation that will surface the suppressed emotion. We want to believe we are cognitive rational beings that on occasion feel, but in reality — we are emotional beings who on occasion think. In my practice, it is very common for my clients to discover during the course of our work together that their physical pain is a symptom of their emotions. This is why a truly holistic approach integrates the mind and emotions in addition to therapies for the physical body. ⁣ ⁣ Here are some of the emotions and correlated symptoms that I have observed in my practice over the last 15 years.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ Acne – perfectionism/self-criticism. ⁣ Acid reflux — difficulty digesting emotional experiences. Suppressed anger. ⁣ Chronic fatigue - suppressed grief. ⁣ Constipation/bloating – immense fear of life/desire to control. ⁣ Difficulty breathing – feeling trapped and out of control/stuck.⁣ Fibromyalgia – suppression of emotions.⁣ Headache – suppressed emotions.⁣ Low back pain - feeling unsupported. ⁣ Low libido – suppression of true desire.⁣ Neck pain – guilt⁣ Overweight – sadness/depression/holding on to the past or a desire to protect/armor. ⁣ Uterine fibroids – sexual abuse/suppression of creativity. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ If you are somaticizing an emotion you may not be aware of the emotion at all. For a variety of reasons, you may have suppressed the emotion and that is why it is manifesting in the physical body. There are no ‘bad feelings.’ It’s our response, suppression, aversion, denial, and shame around a feeling that gets us into trouble.
